Novel excerpts: Post apocalyptic

by Wenmar Badbada

Created on: July 01, 2009

Glass crunched beneath her shoe, the sound abnormally loud in the silent world of dawn/dusk. It had been seven years, but she would know her old friend anywhere. She scratched his friend's head in between his ears as she faintly smiled. She wouldn't smile very often, a rarity in this nuclear fallout. "Love you, Sam." She kissed his forehead as her pet barked enthusiastically. The bark shattered the silence of the library. She once again scratched him in this same place as before and stood up, revealing a thin, tall, and pretty woman. She's fortunate she isn't mutated, as others have fallen to the radiation. She had seen groups of scavengers trying to find their luck while their faces were melted off, only leaving their skulls and eyes. Some even grew tails, ears, something you would see in a fantasy tale.

Autumn was disgusted at the sight and quickly dismissed from her mind. She would daydream constantly, finding nothing to do but read, read, and read. Ever since the bombs fell, her literacy improved as well as her grammar and writing. She and her pet, Sam stood between the many shelves of a library in the desolate city. They recently scavenged for any first aid as well as ammo for her rifle, which she named 'Chinese Assault Rifle.' She could never tell the difference of a 50cal Barrett Sniper Rifle and a AK-47. She hadn't considered the difference though as she saw all rifles as the same.

Autumn hasn't found her luck yet, as all the books she has seen already were burnt to a crisp. She had grown accustom to literature, to the point of risking her life for it. She's willing to pay up to 100 dollars for a book intact; no missing pages, title visible, and author name. When the bombs fell, she stayed confined in her room finding her computer useless, as she'd always been on social sites when she was bored. Now, when she is bored, she has many books to read. Falling into a different world among its pages in each one.

Autumn felt disappointment in her heart. No books to be found, no other parallel universes or worlds can be found in this library. The actual sight of a library without any intact books haunts her conscious. She cursed under her breath as she kicked one of the many burnt books that lay upon the cracked tiled floor. It pounced at the wall as its pages escaped its spine and graciously fell upon the floor. Her pet stared at upon her beautiful face as she was scornful.

She looked below her shoulder witnessing Sam's worried look. "Sorry, boy. I'm just
