How to pass the time on an airline flight

When asked how to pass time on an airline flight, many travelers would probably say they would read, eat or sleep. Traveling companions may choose to do that, but not you. What would you do? There are indeed many ways to pass time on an airline flight. These include catching up on your interests, catching up with friends, rest and relaxation, family time and if you are on a business trip, work.

Interests are plentiful, and many involve sedentary activities which require minimal supplies and space to have fun. A word of caution here, though. For safety and security reasons, crafts requiring cutting and potentially dangerous tools are out of the choice lists when traveling with some airlines. These include craft activities such as knitting because of its long and sharp pointed rods, because of its hook, needlework for similar reasons and any other craft activities that require cutting on the go. If the activity requires cutting and pasting, do the cutting before you pack up your sharp tools into your luggage to be checked in and pack the rest into an airtight ziplog together with a glue stick. Bear in mind that bottles and tubes of liquid glue may also be requested to be removed from your hand luggage, so stick to a small cosmetic container of glue paste.

If you are a game freak, the choices are endless. Do note that electronic devices will be required to be switched off during take-off and landing, so you will not be able to play games to distract yourself from the discomfort in the ears during take-off and landing. Nonetheless, most hand-held game devices will be allowed on board. Be a civic-minded passenger and remember to bring your earphones and minimise noise while you enjoy your game.

If you are on a long flight, you may want to pack in travel size games such as a deck of playing cards for games which require minimal table space and can be played between two players if you are traveling with a partner or you can convince the passenger next to you to join you in the game. With a little foresight, even games such as Snap can be played. Instead of banging your hand down on the cards, you could do other fun action such as putting your hand across your chest and whispering "em". Potentially messy and noisy games such as Stack Uno should be avoided unless you are able to modify them as you would the game of Snap. Games consisting of a few pieces such as Chess and Mastermind come in magnetic sets which will not fly if you are jolted when the airplane hits
