Can God and Darwinism coexist? The answer is "yes," but maybe not because both are true. They can co-exist for the cause of freedom. Both belief systems share features in common.
1. Faith statements
Creationism. Creationism is based on faith in the "first-cause" explanation of creation and life. Creationism rests on some version of the Genesis account of creation in Mesopotamia. While much of the opposition against Creationism is based on Young Earth Creationism or the belief in a literal interpretation of the Genesis account and an earth no older than 10,000 years old, there are other versions of creationism that vary in their interpretation of the timeline and at least one version (Intelligent Design) ignores a timeline.
Darwinism points to possible "first-causes" as well. Life emerged out of some form of mutation process from non-living organisms. While this may seem a stretch it is as reasonable as the conclusion of some that life on earth began through the efforts of aliens or by the introduction of micro-organisms landing on earth on the backs of meteorites. These scenarios are not my imagination. They are clearly expressed by prominent Darwinists on Ben Stein's documentary, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. Probably most bold and most honest was Dr. Richard Dawkins, who replied to the question "how did life begin?" with "I don't know, but by divine intervention."
Neither view has hard-fast evidence that it is the correct view. Young Earth Creationists argue against artifacts that indicate extensive timelines while Darwinists must deal with missing links in the evolutionary chain. The closest to offering scientific evidence is Intelligent Design and its emphasis on using design and complexity in creation to argue against the progressive development of organisms to the DNA level. Creationism and Darwinism inherently require faith.
2. Purpose
Creationism. Both belief systems serve a purpose. Creationism initially served as the origins of Israel's story of special relationship with God through the Old Testament Covenant. The "big picture" of Creationism is to explain why God can determine what is absolutely true in natural laws and moral laws. Creation incurs a responsibility for how we respond to the expectations of God.
Life is to be lived in response to God's expectations and provisions for humanity. Submission to God results in a blessed life in the temporal and an eternity in paradise. Rebellion against God results in negative outcomes in the
