The concept of an online relationship is an unfortunate development due to our change in society brought on by the computer age. Regardless of whether or not a couple that is uniquely dating online has in their minds a legitimate relationship, the fact of the matter is it is not.
An online relationship is formed by a common interest just like most face to face relationships are. Except the online relationship is formed on the sole interest of enjoying spending time online meeting people. And for some people this may be the only interest they have. In that case this may be the only alternative to find the "perfect someone" But there are countless aspects of dating in person that are just impossible to recreate in an online chat room. There is no expression of emotion, there is no sense of how the person really is except for the way they type.
These couples that have never even met each other could not possibly be in love, simply because they don't even know who they are talking to. A lunatic could sound just as inviting as a real life stud over the internet if they were talented enough. But if you met them in person you would know right away which one was which. These online couples may think that they have a real bond but the reality is you don't know who it is that you are madly in love with. The same way someone can fall in love with an actor or actress on the screen, yet be appalled at what they see in the tabloids about said actor or actress. The same goes for their so called online lover.
The way that society is today, in my mind creates this type of allusion that in some way an online relationship constitutes an actual couple. When you can do everything from pay your bills, make a living, get a college degree all from your computer. Why is it surprising that people would date, form relationships, heck even get married from their computers. Why not? The fact is that nothing will ever replace interpersonal interaction while dating.
It is a scary thing to go on a first date, of course. Which makes it so easy to hide behind a computer screen so you can "be yourself" without having to worry about being nervous. Get over it! Wipe the sweat off your hands and ask the pretty girl or handsome guy out, in person! You will know what you are getting and so will he/she. In my opinion there is only one way to meet someone and that is in person. I think our whole world would be better off not just dating the old way but doing everything else the old way. Technology has made our lives easier and way more complicated all at the same time.
