Some people consider pets necessary to complete the family. Studies reveal that children learn a great deal of giving affection and receiving loyalty and devotion from their pets. Nevertheless, it is better to familiarize your baby with pets at not too early age. If you must, bear some important considerations in mind as briefly touched upon in succeeding paragraphs.
Line Up a Veterinarian
Even before you venture to the pet store or a friend's house for getting the pet for your home, line a veterinarian, who could examine your pet before you take it home. This initial check-up would let you know if the pet is suffering from any disease, that you might have missed yourself at the time of purchase. You must be cautious that your baby may pick up some disease or parasites from an unhealthy animal.
Your Own Checklist
Once you have decided a likely pet for your family, make a checklist of commonly known diseases and their symptoms in that kind of animal. Some obvious signs of warning could be moth-eaten feathers, gooey eyes, a dull coat, and lethargic behaviour of the animal. Your friends and Internet search may offer good help for further knowledge on the subject. Some of useful sites on the Internet indicating common pet diseases are listed as follows:-

Hygienic Conditions at the Pet Store
Never buy a pet from a store, where good hygienic conditions are not maintained. Take a general look on the health of all animals. Please note, exposure to unhealthy environment may have lead to a disease in some animals, which is yet not apparent in their behaviour or appearance.
Preparing Your Home for Pets
Be sure to prepare adequate place for your pet in your home. Your pet's boarding should always be kept clean and free of droppings. Therefore select a place which is easier to maintain and also equip necessities like litter box and eating / drinking trays.
Regular Grooming of your Pet
Regularly groom your dog or cat to keep it free from mites, ticks and fleas. A lint remover with a roller is always handy for picking up picks that have yet not dug into the skin.
Personal Hygiene
Be very careful of personal hygiene of your child. Teach your child to wash his hands after he has played with the pet or before taking any meal. This habit would prevent your child from many pets-oriented diseases.
