Internet writing: Why writers need to be competitive

It may not be immediately apparent why writers need to be competitive. Writing is not a sport, neither is it a race. The point is that Internet writing is not quite the same as writing for print publications. Internet writing is highly competitive, and there are several reasons why this is so.

* Writers who find work through freelance job sites are often required to bid on writing jobs, and many freelance writers approach prospective clients and publishers with a query letter or email.

Clients who select a freelance writer to complete a task, or to take part in an ongoing writing project, will base their decision on the freelancer's writing experience and ability. The decision may also depend on what price a writer expects in payment, upon completing the writing task or for providing regular fresh content.

* All Internet writers need to be competitive in using keywords

To be a successful in Internet writing it is important to have good SEO writing skills, and know how to use keywords. Search Engine Optimization is important because the whole point of writing for the Internet is for text on a web page to appear in search results. Marketing articles and promotional content can only work when those pages rank high in search engine results, and are found by people actively seeking something associated with the product or service on offer.

* Writers who earn money from page views needs to be competitive, to generate more advertising revenue.

Advertising revenue is shared with writers at some article sites. These sites have many thousands of active members, and article writers usually have to compete for votes, or to earn a high rating, for their articles. Writers who produce a lot of good quality content on popular topics will generate a better residual income from ad share.

* Writers using a site to sell web content are in direct competition with other members who submit to the same assignments, or who write on similar topics.

It is not always the highest rated article that will sell in an Internet article marketplace. A successful sale will most likely be an article written strictly according to guidelines provided by the publisher or client.

* Article writers can get bigger payments for writing better quality content.

Sites that offer upfront payments will usually base the amount of those payments on a writing score or a star status. These can only be gained by maintaining a constant level of good writing.

Internet writers should always aim to write articles of the highest quality, because they have to work in a highly competitive arena. Only the most competitive writers are successful in getting freelance jobs. Competitive writers make money with marketing articles, earn residual income from ads, sell their own articles, or receive payments for the content they write.
