Will Iranian protest be crushed by the Iranian government while the World Community does nothing effective.
Iranian protest will be crushed by the forces commanded by the Iranian government and it is highly unlikely that the World Community will do or be able to do anything about it. While decent people the world over would like to believe that peaceful protest can force change to the structure of tyrannical regimes, history disputes this idealism.
The only successful occurrence resulted in India's independence from British rule in 1947. But these circumstances were relatively unique. India was dominated by a foreign nation that predominantly used military forces consisting of local troops commanded by British officers. Local forces that were no longer considered loyal or trustworthy since the Indian Mutiny of 1857 to 1859. The British Empire had just fought World War II and was also in the process of conceding more independence and self-rule to many of its colony nations. The mass peaceful demonstrations led by Gandhi were successful in wrenching self-determination for India because the prevailing factors and circumstances favored that result.
Those circumstances do NOT apply in today's world. The civilian populations of many of the nations in today's world live under the suppression of totalitarian governments that maintain their dominance and control through the use of force. No matter how numerous civilian protesters may be, they are unable to stand against even much smaller organized forces armed with military grade modern weapons.
Peaceful protests for democracy and independence have been ruthlessly suppressed in Tibet since the Red Army invasion of 1950. Armed revolt against the Chinese occupation forces occurred from 1956 to 1962, with the Tibetan religious leader the Dalai Lama forced to flee Tibet in 1959. Tibetans who protested in the lead up to the Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2008 are still "disappeared" with no, even prejudicial, court appearances.
The military regime controlling Burma since 1988 has held fair democratic elections but rejected them when the vote went against them. They continue to this day to violently suppress peaceful pro-democracy protests and attempt to suppress violent opposition by revolutionary groups. Burma is also known as Myanmar, an "official" name change made by the military government in 1989 that has not been endorsed by a citizen referendum. Yet the United Nations endorsed the name change just five days after the military junta declared it.
The civilian populations of several African nations are not only harshly treated by their nation's governmental forces but by rebel forces opposing them as well. Both sides being supported by greed-oriented companies of Western nations who supply arms in exchange for resources such as the infamous "blood" diamonds of the Congo region.
The protest of Iranian citizens against fixed elections and totalitarian suppression, whether politically or religiously based, may not end. Decent people making Internet resources available to them despite the efforts of their "government" should allow their voice to continue to be heard. But the physical demonstrations can only continue for a short time, until their violent suppression and the mounting death toll with no visible light at the end of the tunnel causes them to fracture and die.
