Teaching tips: Step-by-step guide to preparing students for presentations

Teaching tips: Step-by-step guide to preparing students for presentations

The most important part of preparing students for giving a presentation is making sure they do their research; and write up their presentation in advance. Their presentation should be factual, organized, and outlined with main ideas, and subtopics. Students should be taught to look at their audience and establish eye contact with people in the audience. Once the student has done the research, finished the project, and done all the necessary things outlined below, the student should feel confident in giving their presentation.

A student's first presentation may be the hardest. Therefore it is important that students learn all aspects of the presentation before giving the presentation. Knowing everything about presentation strategy can reduce anxiety and help the student have self-confidence in their presentation abilities.

A student might give their first presentation in middle school, junior high school, or high school. But the graduate college thesis might also be a student's first real presentation.

Students need to be prepared to give a presentation and teachers or professors can prepare the student for the presentation. Public school students will probably get the best preparation for a presentation. Graduate students may have to prepare themselves for the presentation.

How to prepare students for giving a presentation

1) Presentation programs

You can prepare students for giving a presentation by introducing them to computer presentation programs. These programs provide a presentation format, making it easier to write up the presentation. The most common presentation programs are

* MS Word presentations

* Powerpoint

* Corel presentations

There are also quite a few alternative presentation programs that a student may choose.

2) How to use the presentation program

You can put your students on computers, bring up the presentation program, and go over the fine points in one class. Have them develop a mock presentation on the computer.

3) Basic outline

Provide a basic outline for the topic they will be presenting. Students can follow this outline for writing up their presentation.

4) Research

The student must do research to present their topic. All points in your basic outline should be followed in order to provide adequate and factual research.

5) Timeframe

The student should know about timeframe, which is about how many minutes will be spent on each
