Best college bars in New Orleans

A lot of the bars in New Orleans cater to the huge number of tourists that visit the city, specifically the French Quarter, every year. As a younger person, these bars sometimes do not have the type of crowd to create the atmosphere you are looking for. Below is a list of bars in the Uptown area near some of New Orleans' universities.

The Boot (1039 Broadway Street) Essentially located on Tulane University's campus, this bar is all about the late night and happy hour crowds. It offers awesome bar deals for the money-conscious college student. The Boot's happy hour deals are excellent as well. When in season, they sell cheap crawfish at happy hour. It is a late night bar with a very late night close.

F&M Patio Bar (4841 Tchoupitoulas Street) This crowded, dirty roadhouse style bar could be a dive bar. Go here if you love to dance, especially on pool tables. They have great late night food (try the cheese fries) and PBR on tap. There are three bars in one, all in separate rooms with different play lists. Very popular on Thursday nights, but have a few before you go.

Phillip's Restaurant and Bar (733 Cherokee Street) - Phillip's is a little classier than the usual college haunts with its smooth and elegant dcor. It is very dark and moody. There are a few pool tables in the back and large patio area that shuts pretty early because the neighbors complain about the noise. There are great looking bartenders (they released a calendar a few years back). This bar is lower key, but gets pretty busy on big nights. Thursday is Ladies Night (girls get three free drinks) and Wednesday is $3 martinis with a $5 cover that includes an all you can eat buffet.

Grits Bar (530 Lyons Street) Bounce back and forth between here and F&Ms as they are located right next door to each other. This bar also gets pretty busy on Thursday nights. It is perfect for college students with its cheap drinks and relaxed atmosphere. It has very cheap beer. Be sure to be careful in the neighborhood at night.

The Palms (7130 Freret Street) Bounce back and forth between here and the Boot (they are a block away from each other, and you'll more than likely run into a frat party on the way). It is definitely nicer than the Boot with pricier drinks and nicer dcor, but the clientele is the same. The outdoor patio is great to relax in and the DJ indoors continues until the morning if the crowd is still there.

These bars are all full of New Orleans' many college students when school is in session. The only time there are locals here is usually during the summer.
