When Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law in 1935, it was intended to be a help to the elderly and disabled. Unfortunately, it has become something more than a help. For too many people it has become the only source of retirement income that they have.

With an ever increasing elderly population, and an out of control government that has borrowed the Social Security Trust Fund into certain bankruptcy, I believe that the time has come to end the Social Security program.

This is not something that can be done immediately. Nor is it something that can be done within the next 10 - 15 years. It is, I believe, something that needs to be done slowly, so that those who will soon retire will still have a safety net, and those who will not retire for another 20 - 30 years can begin saving for their retirement.

My plan for ending Social Security would look something like this.

The first thing that we would need to do is change the tax system that we now have in this country. I would be in favor of a consumption tax or national sales tax in place of the current income tax system that we have today.

I am a strong supporter of the Fair Tax that has been proposed by Georgia Congressman John Linder. This one size fits all tax would replace all of the national taxes that are in place today, making it easier for the average American to see exactly where every one of his/her hard earned dollars go.

There is not enough space in this article for me to give the arguments needed to support the Fair Tax, so I suggest that you do your own research at their website, fairtax.org .

The biggest benefit to this tax is that it taxes you only on the money that you spend for new items. Because of this, it encourages Americans to save more of their income. We have become more reliant on government today, because we do not have the money that we need to support ourselves. The more we make, the more we get taxed. We get taxed on the money we earn, the money we spend, the money we save, and the money we invest. The Fair Tax would eliminate all of this, except for the money that we actually spend.

Once the Fair Tax is in place, we can eliminate Social Security and all of the problems that it is beginning to cause our country. Here is my plan for doing that.

Anyone that is currently receiving Social Security, or is due to begin to receive Social Security within the next 15 years will do so, as has already been planned. They will be able to receive that benefits
