How to avoid food cravings during pregnancy

Cravings are one of the most common things associated with pregnancy...aside from the weight gain and the bulging belly. Women may crave normal food such as something salty or sweets but also the oh so famous pickles and ice cream. I personally never had a pickles and ice cream craving. In fact, no one I actually know has ever had that craving, but someone must have at one time for it to be so well know as a pregnancy craving.

Cravings during pregnancy result from hormonal changes in the body. An increased sense of smell can also play into that. Something to keep in mind is if you have a craving but are not really hungry, try getting your mind off of the food and onto something else such as work, family, call a friend, or daydream about your soon to be bundle of joy.

Cravings during pregnancy do not necessarily have to be a bad thing as long as the foods you are craving are consumed in moderation and are healthy for the baby...no alcoholic drinks. During my first pregnancy I craved Chinese food. During my second it was corn dogs. Now I am pregnant with my third and I crave chocolate. The Chinese and corn dogs aren't a problem if eaten in moderation but too much chocolate isn't good for you or the baby because of the sugar and caffeine.

I found that the best way to handle my chocolate cravings is to buy a bag of bite-size candy bars. When I want chocolate I will grab a couple of them and leave the bag in the cabinet. This helps me to satisfy the craving without eating an entire candy bar or two.

I have also found that chewing spearmint or mint gum can help with my cravings if I have had too much of a food or do not have the particular food available to me. I think part of it is psychological, but the other part is that nothing really tastes good after chewing spearmint or mint gum. It's like drinking orange juice right after brushing your teeth. Or...just brush your teeth!

Overall, most cravings are normal and as long as consumed in a conservative manner it should not be of any concern. You do need to keep nutrition in mind though because what you eat your baby eats. It's important to balance your nutritional needs. If you are craving something salty and eat chips a lot then you should avoid putting any salt on all other food items. If your cravings are sweet items try limiting those items and all other sugar intake. You have to remember that eating healthy is best for your baby.

Pregnancy should be enjoyed as much as possible...not a time of everyone telling you that you can't do this or that. Knowing how to properly handle cravings will hep your pregnancy go smoother.
