Communication, according to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, "is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behavior". In simpler terms, it is the way you express yourself to others both verbally and nonverbally. A way to let people know what you think, feel and have to say through spoken word as well as body language.
Body language, gestures and unconscious body movements that serves as nonverbal communication, can tell someone just as much if not more than anything anyone say. Since nonverbal communication makes up 93% of all communication, by paying attention to how someone sits, stands, eye movements, facial expressions or even hand gestures one can learn many things. Knowing how to read body language can go a long way in being more understanding of what someone is truly saying.
From an early age, most people are taught to make eye contact when speaking to someone, that this shows you are paying attention to what they are saying and is the polite thing to do. Direct eye contact can also show other things, such as intimidation or that a person doesn't trust the speaker enough to take their eyes off of them. We are often also taught that lack of eye contact shows disinterest or someone being dishonest. Because there are other things that could factor into the lack of eye contact it is considered a secondary and misleading gesture. It should be taken into thought along with other body gestures.
The way a person sits, stands or even walks can speak volumes about them. It can tell one things about them that they are never willing to verbally say. Even something as minute as their smile can speak to their true feelings about a situation. A true smile involves ones entire face, one which doesn't reach the eyes is fake and they are only trying to placate you.
There are many examples of body language to be aware of involving different parts of the body.
Walking and Standing
- A brisk, erect walk shows confidence in a person.
- Walking with ones hands in their pockets and their shoulders hunched is a sign of dejection.
- Standing with ones hands on their hips can be a sign of impatience, readiness or aggression.
- Standing with hands locked behind the back is a sign of anger, frustration or of one trying to maintain self control.
- Standing with legs and feet pointed in a particular direction is a sign of interest in that direction.
Sitting
- Sitting with legs apart can
