The Birmingham Alabama Zoological Park offers visitors an opportunity to interact with and learn about a wide variety of unique and interesting animal species. In fact, the Birmingham Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in the state of Alabama and has over 500 000 visitors every year.
Over 800 animals are cared for by the zoo's professionally trained keepers and curators. In fact, there are well over 200 species from around the world living in the Birmingham Zoo. In addition to providing well maintained natural habitats for the animals there is also an on site Animal Nutrition Center to care for the unique dietary needs of each and every animal.
When visiting the zoo make sure to check out the following animals and exhibits:
Lorikeet Feedings: Stop by to watch as the pelicans catch fish in their beaks, take time to feed the lorikeets or just take in the beauty of the ostriches, cranes and brightly colored flamingos.
African Savannah: Take in the African Savannah where you will see some the most beautiful and regal animals in the world. From ostriches and kudu to lions and giraffes this exhibit is not to be missed! Don't miss the giraffe feeding! From 10 am -11 am every weekend the zookeepers take the time to facilitate giraffe feeding sessions with guests in the African Savannah exhibit.
Wild Cats: See the white Bengal tiger in all its glory. These beautiful and rare cats are fascinating predators.
Primates: Gorillas, tamarins, gibbons and lemurs oh my! Stop by the beautiful primate exhibit to see the monkeys as they monkey around. There are also daily gorilla talks in front of the Lowland Gorilla exhibit. Learn all about the beautiful and majestic gorilla.
Splashing Sea Lions: Watch as the sea lions swim in their pool! These fun and playful animals take a dip in the pool twice daily and put on an unforgettable laugh-out-loud show that the whole family will enjoy!
Wild in Your Backyard: Go on a Wild in Your Backyard tour where you can see Animals that are native to the state of Alabama. From skunks to bald eagles there are a variety of interesting and unique animals living in the area.
Kangaroo Kounty: One of the newest exhibits at the zoo is Kangaroo Kounty. Located near Lorikeet Avery the Kangaroo exhibit features kangaroos, wallabies, reptiles and birds that originate from Australia. Get up close and personal with the lovely Kangaroos. Not only can you reach out and touch the kangas but you can also take the time to feed them their lunch!
The zoo can take a full day to visit so make sure to pack some lunch, sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water!
