Poetry: Losing a pet

Tears for My Friend of Seven Years

I once had a friend who sat with me
Giving a warm nudge whenever I felt sad
She stayed beside me all through the night
Welcoming me always with each morning's light.

My Friend has great ears for hearing
Where mine fail, her ears protected me.
Going for quiet walks together outside
Sharing a cuddle on the couch and sneezing on me.

Manners. Yes, she always did ask please.

When the babies get overtired, overactive a bit,
She always tried her best to sit through it,
Or sometimes retreating to her quiet room.

Each morning she greeted me
With eyes bright, patiently waiting with love.
My Special Friend of Seven Years stayed beside me.
Lending me her ears.

Now time has passed.
Her favorite chair and strawberry cushion
Are still there.
Very good for cutting her hair,
Or for a bath, she learned to bear.

When I'd vacuum the floor
Which one liked it more?
In the kitchen she was beside me always,
Doing dishes or cooking, sweeping or mopping
Or hanging out clothes,
She was always there, never stopping.

One night she went out for her nightly walk
And she never came back inside.

Where are you tonight on this rainy night?
My Friend, my pet of seven long years.
What will I do without your hearing ears?

Your pillow is here
With your dish and your brush
If someone has claimed you,
I pray they will love you,
But, not nearly as much.
Should you find your way home someday,
I will be waiting for you, 'til then I pray.

I miss you my friend
And I will 'til the end.
I'll look for you at each road's bend
All my love without end, Amen.

Peaches is blonde, with a small black face.
A Pekingese that has been with our family for seven years.
Should you find "My Friend", she has a family waiting for her.
We love and miss her dearly.

To look at her, she may be cute,
But she is a part of each of us.
We love her; we protected her as she protected us.
My ears miss the doorbell and the phone.
Our little 2-year old granddaughter asked today,
"Where is my Friend? Where did she go?
I humbly had to answer, "I do not know."

Our Friend of Seven Years, our beloved Peaches,
Please come home.
