Developing healthy eating habits in children

Developing healthy eating habits in children is vital at the earliest possible age if they are to grow at the optimum rate to be both healthy and strong. If a parent takes the attitude that the child is just, "Going through a phase," or will grow out of their unhealthy and unnatural eating preferences given time, the parent could well be allowing and even actively encouraging a lifetime of unhealthy eating habits to develop which will cause untold health problems or difficulties.

All children have preferences in what they like to eat, just as all adults do. This is perfectly natural and, within reason, perfectly acceptable. What is not acceptable, however, is where a child will ostensibly be prepared only to eat such as junk food or foods which offer them little or none of the necessary vitamins and nutrients. This would be an issue which would require a parent address without delay.

Very often, children claim not to like certain foodstuffs more because of their appearance than because of their taste. It can not be denied that unhealthy foodstuffs often appear more attractive than nutritious ones, simply because this is the way in which they have been designed by their producers or manufacturers. The challenge facing a parent in such circumstances is to come up with meals which are attractive to their children and can make mealtimes every bit as much fun at home as they would be at the local fast food restaurant.

What a parent can consider is precisely how the fast food restaurants go about making their meals appeal to children. Essentially, they make the presentation of the meal rather than the food itself appealing. I vividly recall as a child wanting to eat nothing other than meat, fish and cheese and having no interest whatsoever in vegetables or - perhaps surprisingly - anything sweet. What my mother used to do was make such as a smiling face on my plate with perhaps mashed potatoes as the face, peas as the smiling mouth and slices of carrot as the eyes and nose. That is merely one example.

Developing healthy eating habits in children, however, also includes ensuring that the food is served them properly prepared. One pet hate of children in terms of foodstuffs is broccoli and the main reason for this is probably because broccoli is so often overcooked. Broccoli should be firm in texture when cooked, not soggy or mushy, and if served in the latter form, it is little wonder children are put off the enjoyment of it.

Developing healthy eating habits in children is therefore an ongoing task perhaps over a period of many years and is as important to their life education as any other aspect. The advent of the Internet has meant that parents now have a wealth of information to assist them in this task and where significant problems do arise, it is imperative that they are addressed as soon as possible.
