Video Game Reviews: Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)

Released for Xbox in November 2008 by Valve Entertainment, Left 4 Dead brings zombie fighting to a whole new level.

Set during the aftermath of a viral pandemic, gamers can play as one of four characters. Louis, a Junior Systems Analyst who is tired of his job; Bill, a two tour Vietnam vet; Francis, the tough tattooed biker; or Zoey, the zombie movie obsessed college student whose horror cinema knowledge comes in handy.

Like an interactive movie, the "director" offers four campaigns for players to choose from, each complete with an intro movie poster and tag line. In "Dead Air," survivors must make their way to the airport where a transport plane is waiting to fly them out of the infected city. "No Mercy" finds the survivors heading towards the rooftop helipad at Mercy Hospital. "Blood Harvest," as the title hints, has the four survivors running through a creepy corn field to an abandoned farmhouse where they must fend off zombies until the army vehicle arrives to extract them. The fourth campaign, "Death Toll" runs through a countryside setting, ending with the survivors holding out at a boat house until help arrives. Follow the end of each campaign, the credits rolls showing different statistics such as how many times a survivor was incapacitated, shooting accuracy, and how many zombies were killed during the making of the film.

Along with your every day once-human zombies, developers created five special infected zombies that you have to be on the look out for and keep your ears open for as they each have their own theme music and sounds. More dangerous than the normal zombies, it's almost impossible to beat them without team work. The Hunters are stealthy and fast, and once a survivor is pounced, they will continue to slash until another survivor pushes the Hunter off or kills them. Boomers, on the other hand, don't need close contact to do damage. This obese special infected can aim projectile vomit right at the survivors not only covering them in the disgusting bile which attracts the zombie horde, but also temporarily blinds the survivor. Being too close to the Boomer while shooting it will also get the survivors covered in the pheromone-like substance. Smokers will normally stick to high places such as rooftops and the only giveaway of their presence is the sound of their hacking cough. Smokers have a long tongue which shoots out at a survivor, wrapping them and dragging them to the Smoker where he and other zombies begin to slash away. Survivors
