army dreams and ticking clocks.

he talks of puppies and ducks
and a mystical happiness
not too far from here

but all the girl can hear
is the truth
a pow
pow
pow
more close to the future than the stories he weaves

a life of m16s and battle tanks
waiting for letters that slowly
slowly don't come

clocks that tick
tick
tick away at her heart
for a nine week period
that will only break her more

waiting expecting a boy
who may come back
but not always to her
not always for her

but she will wait
hope
dream of the land of puppies
of the ducks and the turkies
and the house with the victorian tower
on the beach

these stories will get her through her last few weeks with him
allow her to meet his eyes without tears
kiss him without thoughts of saying goodbye
but in her ear
when he whispers i love you
all she hears is tick
tick
tick
