Take the plunge! I know it's hard, especially if you've been stuck in the same groove for several years, but it's just like ripping off a Band-Aid. At first it'll sting but it can't hang on forever looking tacky and gross. You will feel far better if you can define yourself by who you are on the outside as well as on the inside.
A good way to start is from head to toe. First, find a hairstyle you like in a magazine. Bring it to a TALENTED stylist (don't scrimp, here!). Search on the internet for local stylists with rave reviews. Be sure to ask how the style and/or color can be adapted to suit your needs, your look, your lifestyle, and your face shape. Don't be afraid of change! This might well be the hardest part, especially if you're going from a long to a short cut. Trust your stylist!
Next, you'll need fresh-looking, fun makeup that you actually enjoy putting on! I would suggest venturing to a local Sephora (my favorite) or MAC store and have them play with your face. Just ask what colors look best on you and how to apply them, and they will show you free of charge. Be sure to buy makeup for both day and evening looks.
After your face has been beautified, it's time to update the clothes. My suggestions: Forever 21, Plato's Closet, and H&M (for those on a budget); Express, Banana Republic, and Macy's. Nordstrom is also wonderful about suggesting pieces that work for your body type, and they also have fabulous shoes! If you're into more unique pieces, check out www.etsy.com for handmade originals, or www.ebay.com if you don't want to wander aimlessly around a store trying to find what you want.
Now for the handbags. Be sure that you have several different colors here in order to go with all of your new ensembles. I would suggest starting with at least a white and a black. Later, you will discover that you may also want a brown or tan, and a pop color such as plum or yellow. Kohl's and Macy's have lots of sleek, affordable designer handbags and Target has lots of funky, colorful ones. If you like more upscale designers, check out Coach and Louis Vuitton.
A few fabulous shoe spots are www.zappos.com (free shipping for returns!), DSW, and Payless or Marshalls on a budget. Never buy anything you don't absolutely LOVE. That goes for clothing, too. Don't settle.
And please don't forget the essential mani/pedi (read: manicure and pedicure). It really adds that last finishing touch to a pulled-together look.
Voila! Your mirror is your new BFF!
