"Ed! How have you been?"
Finding an American bartender had made this not only Selena's favorite place to decompress, but also her "home" bar for a quiet drink. Tonight was definitely a white wine kind of night, and with the weekly specials, it made it a good night for that aim.
"Hey, here's the wine list. What will it be? This Gewurztraminer is new, and not too bad. Your table is free. I'll bring it over"
"Perfect. Come over when you have time so we can catch up."
As Selena made her way to the corner where she liked to park and watch the room, she noticed a few women at a table. One of them caught her eye. She couldn't help turning to look when she sat down. Wondering.
"Here you go. So what have you been up to? Any good stories?"
"Thanks. Yeah. I got an amazing interview last week. Salman Rushdie was in town for a lecture. Not well publicized, to protect him."
"Really? I loved Midnight's Children. How did you get close enough to him?"
"Right place, right time. That gave me some bonus points with the boss."
"I'm sure."
"What's new with you?"
"More of the same. My parents are coming to visit next month."
"That should be fun."
"Yeah, they've never met my girlfriend..."
"Wow, that's a big step. Sounds serious."
"Yeah, we've been talking about getting married."
"Congrats! That's great. Well, I hope your parents love her."
"I think they will. Oh, excuse me... I've got to go. But we're having a party next week. You should come."
"I'd love to. Here's my number. Let me know."
"Will do. Good to see you."
"Same."
Hours had passed, and Selena was one of the few people left in the restaurant. The two women were nowhere to be seen. Selena couldn't get her out of her head. She was beautiful. They had been flirting with the waiter. Occasionally Selena had interjected a comment or response to a joke they made. At least she wasn't the only person closing out the bar...
As she exited the doors, she saw them standing by the railing, with the waiter. Selena approached "Did you know you left your bags inside?"
"Oh yes. Thank you."
Small talk was easy. Alexia introduced herself, and once Selena mentioned New York, she got excited and started telling Selena about her favorite places when she had been there. Selena was intoxicated.
Alexia was a photographer. Selena found herself navigating her routes by her studio, hoping she might run into her again. Could it be, she had a crush? On a woman? It was hard for Selena to get used to. Then one day, unexpectedly,
