How to market tourism

The process of how to market tourism is not one which should be overly complicated. Too often, those trying to market their country, city or resort to tourists go way overboard in their endeavours and essentially only succeed in confusing their potential visitors. The way to market tourism successfully is precisely the same as any other successful marketing campaign in that it is about tempting the customer to buy in to what they are at least made to believe they want.

The specifics of how to market tourism will of course depend upon the precise location and what it has to offer the potential tourist. The marketing department or individual responsible for the marketing campaign should in the first instance brainstorm what the location has that it is either unique, exceptionally interesting or in some other way likely to appeal to those who are not from the area. This should quite literally be a process of either touring the location themselves and jotting down brief notes or, if they already know it well enough, simply sifting through the locale in their mind's eye.

The next step is to identify to which social group each item on the list is likely to appeal. This may cover everything from the hot, sunny weather conditions which are likely to have very wide appeal to the extremely specialised museums, dealing in ancient history, which are not. When each aspect of the locale's appeal has been assigned a social group to which it is likely to appeal, it is time to write an article, create a Website or even produce some form of newsletter specifically for that group which will tantalise them and prick their interest in visiting the location to see for themselves what it can offer them in respect of their particular interests or requirements.

There can be little doubt that in modern times the way to promote and market tourism is on the Internet. This is therefore where the initial steps should be taken to market the destinations, features or attractions of the site or location in question. It may be that extremely general sites are sufficient upon which to market the features and benefits of the venue but the problem in this instance is that the competition is certain to be much more fierce. It is far better therefore to target niche markets and appeal in a very specific sense to particular groups of people. This could be on forums, by requesting links on blogs or simply by creating an extremely targeted Web 2.0 hosting page.

It is vital also to attract the interest of tourist authorities and travel agents in the countries or regions where the most likely visitors are likely to reside. This may involve translation services but without targeting the potential visitors in their own language, the chances of successfully doing so are minimal. It is entirely possible that there will be tourist authorities in the host country willing to undertake this service as the process of securing bookings is of course also in their particular interest.

How to market tourism is simply a case therefore of giving people a reason to visit a particular destination and piquing their curiosity. They should be given a taste of what to expect but never full details, so that their own human nature makes them want to come and see and find out more for themselves.
