Why fewer distractions leads to less accidents

There can be no doubt that fewer distractions leads to less accidents when driving a car. The number of road traffic accidents which are caused by the driver being distracted while at the wheel are immense and as though the accidents themselves are not cause enough for concern, a very high number of them can lead to serious injury or even loss of life.

There are countless incidences in everyday life when distractions can lead to problems. It can be something as simple as trying to read a complex document and interruptions keep coming. It could be where we are trying to concentrate on a TV programme and someone talking to us produces the same effect. These are of course minor examples and are irritating but when it comes to such as operating a dangerous piece of machinery or driving a car, the distractions can have far more serious consequences.

I remember well as a child having a friend whose father would not allow conversation in the car when he was driving. Although this is perhaps a little extreme, the principles of what he was attempting to ensure were sound in that his belief was that he had to concentrate not only on his driving but on what other drivers were doing and all that was happening round about him as he drove the car if he were to successfully minimise the chances of anything untoward occurring.

Distractions for a driver can come in many shapes and forms. They can be in the form of such as young children arguing in the back seat, they can be in the form of a cell or mobile phone ringing, or they can be in the form of someone talking to them about a controversial or thought-provoking subject. These are just the distractions which can occur within the vehicle itself and lead to a momentary lapse of concentration on the driver's part which can lead to potential disaster.

When driving a car, the driver has enough to concern themselves with outwith the vehicle and what is happening on the road round about them. They have to watch the actions of other drivers, they have to be aware of traffic signals and they have to be aware of anything and everything untoward which could potentially affect the smooth passage of their journey. If something in the car itself distracts them - even for a split second - it could cause them to become aware too late of something which can lead to disaster.

There is no doubt that such as legislation to prevent use of cell or mobile phones while driving has and will lead to a reduction in the number of accidents on roads but it is imperative that all distractions for the driver be kept to a minimum if the safety of all in the car is to be ensured to the best of the driver's ability.
