Congratulations! You've landed a new job and now you want to know what you can do to make the best impression in your first days there. If you haven't already thought about this, it's time to start before you take your very first step into your new workplace.
There are some general guidelines for making a good impression in your early days at work. They touch on different aspects of work and the work ethic, in general. Consider the following:
Be on Time
It doesn't hurt to be a little early, and this goes for not only the first few days on the job but for as long as you plan to stay. Look around you and notice how many people come in late and think nothing of it. Don't be one of them! This also goes for breaks. If you have 15 minutes, don't come back in 20 or 25, whether someone is watching you or not.
Learn by Listening
The first few days may seem like a blur to you with all you're being told to do. However, no one expects you to remember everything, so don't despair. If you do have trouble remembering details, and there are not written references to go to; you should take some notes. You could even make up a notebook and organize it by different categories. Do whatever it takes to get the new information down, but mostly listen and pay attention to what you're being told.
Pitch in and Help
If you notice that everyone takes turns with even the most menial chores at your workplace, be willing to pitch in right alongside of them. You will earn respect for helping do whatever it takes to get the job done. Co-workers who will be looking closely at you will consider you okay when you show you don't mind performing certain duties that aren't really in your work description.
Respect your co-workers
You don't have to fall in love or be best friends with co-workers, but you do have to work with them every day, so be prepared to have a cordial, if not close, relationship with them all. A smile and a few friendly words go a long way to help you become one of the group.
Don't be a Kiss-up
No one likes a new worker who comes in and immediately tries to show up everyone else on the job. It's fine to let your immediate supervisor know you have some ideas that might be helpful, but don't go in and start changing everything around on your first day. You will only gain enemies by doing this, and that's no way to start a new job.
These are just a few tips to help you get started. It's never too early to make your best impression, even in your first days on the job.
