When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO); building links is always incredibly important. Building links helps you improve your position in the search engines, and when you run a website it's a good idea to try and trade links with others, and begin to start building up your backlinks.
As well as exchanging links with others, there are a number of other ways to create backlinks to your website/blog, and these include utilising social networking sites, article directories, and also forums. If you regularly frequent forums then it's worth putting your link/s in your signature, and using social networking sites to submit your articles is a brilliant way to shoot up the search engine ranks. Leaving comments on other people's blogs is another way to increase backlinks, and although there are a lot of websites that 'nofollow' the links; you will find that there are many number of websites out there that utilise 'dofollow' links for comments, and these are the sites where commenting will be of benefit.
Whatever stage you're at with your website, and however long it's been running, you should always be looking to increase your backlinks, and remain at the very top of the ranks for your chosen key terms. It's good to get going with backlink building as soon as possible, but it's also a great idea to never stop looking to increase your backlinks, and to always be on the lookout for backlink building opportunities.
Relevant links are important as Google will overlook links that aren't, and although it's good to get as many links as possible; it's important to create quality links on popular websites as these links are a lot more valuable than links from websites that are not. It's important not to overlook quality in favour of quantity, and as previously stated; relevance is key when it comes to creating backlinks. If you're running a world news website for instance, then receiving links from other news sites will be of great benefit, whereas a link from a Lolcats website for example wouldn't be so useful.
Creating excellent content is key to the success of any website/blog, the importance of creating quality backlinks should never be underestimated though, and it's difficult to achieve online success without having the search engines on your side. Backlinks will help get you indexed quicker and rank higher up in the search engines, and this will therefore bring you success with greater amounts of organic traffic.
Creating quality backlinks is a very important part of SEO, and if you fail to acknowledge its importance and don't dedicate time to creating backlinks; your website traffic will therefore suffer. If you're not too ambitious with your website then you may feel that traffic is of an acceptable standard without dedicating too much time to building backlinks, if the effort is put in to get backlinks though then traffic numbers could be a lot higher.
Backlinks can be built steadily over time, and the more you get your link around; the greater success you should therefore ultimately see.
