The top power tools every woodworker should have

When setting up a collection of those power tools which are essential to efficiency in the workshop, priorities are important. There are many power tools on the market which are surplus to requirements in the beginning stages. This article outlines the power tools which do make a difference to use of the workshop and are considered as the top power tools every woodworker should have.

Drills.

Basic power tools are those stock items which are used on an almost daily basis to help the carpenter to perform their work in a more efficient manner than with hand tools. An electric drill is one of the first tools to consider. Look at the different weight, and establish the kind of work you will use it for before purchase. Mid range drills are a safer bet, as these will cover most eventualities. Cheap tools are not a good idea since these can let you down at critical times. Be sure that you can easily buy drill bits which are suitable for that drill. If you decide to go cordless, this does have several advantages, though also disadvantages. Be sure to choose a drill which has an extra power pack, since it can be difficult if power runs out just as you need it. The advantage of these is that they are so lightweight and easily portable.

One of the great things about a cordless power drill is that it has the capability of being turned into a power screwdriver, which can save a lot of work, acting as a dual purpose power tool which is easily stored away or housed on your workshop bench.

A pillar drill.

A pillar drill allows you to drill holes in wood which are much more accurate than those performed with a hand drill. This makes it an ideal tool to use for cutting simple mortises, which can be chiseled out with a hand chisel or router after the drilling process. The depth setting also adds to the accuracy of using a pillar drill.

Sanders.

Before investing money in a sander, be sure that you are happy with the type. These come in several presentations. Belt sanders are the standard for woodwork. These have a replaceable belt which can be loaded with different grades of sandpaper and which sands along the grain of the wood in an even motion. Often people are tempted to buy orbital sanders, and these have more limited use, though are lightweight and useful for small areas or shaping.

When choosing a sander, feel how comfortable the sander is in your hand. You will be spending many hours using it and this is important. Look too at the availability
