Assessing website writing: Is your content an asset or a liability?

Always check content to ensure it is an asset to your website. Your content needs to be assessed for search engine optimization, authenticity and appearance, otherwise you could be adding something that is a liability to your site. Above all be sure the writing is original and genuine.

Never use content illegally. If you were to break copyright laws, or to plagiarize what someone else has written, your site could be taken down by your web host, even if you had done it unintentionally.

1. Assess web content for Search Engine Optimization.

Your content is an asset when it shows up well in search results. Duplicated content performs less well in search results than original content, which drives traffic to a website much more effectively.

Use keywords efficiently to ensure all your content is indexed by search engines. Increase your search engine optimization by checking that the most suitable keywords appear in both the opening and closing paragraphs, as well as in the title and tags. Check how many times the exact same words and phrases are repeated within the article.

* Web content is a liability when it appears only to have been written for the purpose of SEO. Visitors will notice if the writing does not make sense and is stuffed too full of keywords.

2. Assess web content for authenticity.

Your content is an asset when it provides website visitors with the information they seek. When it verifies anything that is quoted or stated as fact, by showing links to official sites and providing resources, that is authentic web content.

Website writing should be factually correct, without any obvious omissions and errors. All content should be fact checked, proofread and edited, so mistakes can be corrected before it is submitted or posted online.

* Web content is a liability when it makes unverified statements and is poorly presented. Visitors will not feel confident in a website that makes false claims or incorrect statements.

3. Assess web content for appearance.

Your content is an asset when the writer makes good use of subheadings and has clearly defined points. Internet users prefer to scan through content quickly, rather than read long passages of text.

Format your website content so there is plenty of space around each point and short paragraph. Subheading should be used to break up the text into small portions.

* Web content is a liability when it appears as a solid piece of text with no breaks. Poor grammar and spelling will make it even more difficult to read. When content is not easy to read, visitors will leave the site without noticing what is being promoted.

It is important to assess the quality of writing, to ensure your content is suitable for its purpose. Your content must clearly be an asset, and never a liability.
