The Day of The Lord is a great an terrible day. Are your arms long enough to box with God?
The book Joel was written to the people of Judah; it was a warning for them to return to their God. They were to repent and humble themselves before the Lord. This minor prophet son of Pethuel 1:1 meaning persuaded of God. This prophet has the duty of God to warn the people of Judah for their sins.
Do we understand and believe that the Lord will have His day? This is when God will fulfill his purpose for humankind. This will began when Christ returns and it will end with fire my friends. Since Christ has shown mercy by allowing all that want to be saved have a chance to come to Him that is why He has not returned.
Joel, a book of blessings and judgments - the name Joel means Yahweh which is God. This book has only three (3) chapters but it requires intense study to grasp what is taking place in the book. The prophet Joel envisioned God's spirit being poured out on all flesh 2:28 just before that great and terrible day of the Lord. The prophet had a message of destruction and judgment but it was still time for the people to avert disaster.
Have you ever wondered what will take place on the day of the Lord? The day will be completely dark with no light or the presence of light. But before the day of the Lord imagine the great invasion of locust swarming over all the earth. This will be followed by a great and terrible drought; nothing will be able to survive this terrible time. The locust will devour everything green on the earth leaving all the vegetation plucked. What the chewing locust leave the crawling locust will eat and what the crawling locust leave the consuming will eat. Then there is the fire that will destroy what is not eaten by the locust. Can you even imagine a time when there is no vegetation, no water for anything or anyone.
Animals will die in the fields for lack of water, but before they die they will commence wailing. The brooks are all dried up of water and the fire has devoured the fields. The drunks will want to get drunk to avoid thinking about the situation but there will be no wine to drink.
As tragic as this is to envision it is pale in comparison to what are in store for those who do not trust in God as their savior. God will judge all nations because His judgment is righteous. He sometimes uses natural disasters or your enemy will be allowed to defeat you.
There are two things that should be noted this book is: The Day of the Lord Retrospect and Day of the Lord in Prospect. Retrospect is the historical invasion past judgment on Judah and Prospect is prophetic invasion, future judgment and restoration of Judah. There was and is always a way back to the Lord. The conditional promise of salvation:
1. Repent: this does not mean to just say that you are sorry but stop what you are doing and turn from your wicked ways.
2. Turn to the Lord with all your heart with fasting and prayer. For God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness 2:14
3. Confess your sins before God.
The blessing of the Lord will be bountiful for his people. God will bring judgment on his people followed by great blessings.
God will always win.
