How to write a mission statement

Writing an effective mission statement in four easy steps include orientation, component analysis, communication analysis, and applicability analysis (Cochran, David, and Gibson, 2008). Mission statements should be so simple that the statement captures the essence of the organization and what the organization stand for in just a few words. A mission statement needs to convey the intended message in just a few seconds in order to capture the hearers or readers attention.

Orientation

A mission statement is an essential element in the strategic planning of an organization because a mission statement can be the spark that brings success or failure. The first step to writing a mission statement is orientation. Writing the mission statement must begin with identifying the fundamental reason the organization exists (Cochran et al, 2008). The next action that is needed is identifying who, what, when, where, why, and how of the mission and writing this on paper.

Component Analysis

The second step in writing an effective mission statement involves looking at the various components the mission statement should include such as customers, products or services, markets, technology, concern for survival, growth and profitability, and philosophy, self concept, and concern for public image (Pearce, 1982). When writing this portion it is important to write down everything that is considered important to the operation and profitability of the organization. The purpose of this section is to define the organization in terms of internal and external awareness measures.

Communication Analysis

The third step to writing an effective mission statement involves communication. Now that you understand what the purpose is and have an idea of what the organization consists of the time has arrived to determine how all this can be communicated to internal and external customers (Cochran et al, 2008). Writing an effective mission statement involves making sure that the mission statement conveys the same message in every manner in which it can be communicated and it may not be a bad idea to consider what the mission statement communicates if it has to be translated into another language.

Applicability Analysis

Now that you have gained an understanding of the organization's purpose, elements, and the best possible way to communicate the mission you are now ready to determine what happens when someone hear the mission when it has been communicated (Cochran
