Movie previews: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

I am Optimus Prime.

Well, no, I'm not, but I have days when I wish I was. And today was definitely one of those days. Seeing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at the IMAX Theatre will do that to you. The highly-anticipated sequel to 2007's hit film inspired by a bunch of plastic toys, is a well-executed fantasy ride and everything a big summer blockbuster should be.

Where we saw Sam (Shia LaBoeuf) and the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, succeed in saving the Earth from an attack by the Decepticons at the end of the last film, we pick up the story with Sam headed off to an Ivy League college as he tries to act like a super normal kid and forget he and his girlfriend, Michaela (Megan Fox), discovered an alien race of robots. Sam's college stay lasts about a day before he gets drawn back into the fight to protect Earth from the evil and destructive Decepticons.

The story might sound fairly similar to that of the first film and, except for there being no need to explain what the robots are this time, it is. It's the same fumbling lead character in the start, the same crazy ride, the same loss of hope and the same eventual triumph. Perhaps this time they leave the ending open for a third sequel more than they did in the first film, but it's still the same, so if you're looking for gripping intellect and intrigue, avoid this.

But if you're looking for one of the most exciting films of the summer (I still have a secret hope that the new Harry Potter film will top this), then buy your Transformers ticket now. LaBoeuf is charming and executes his comedic scenes with perfect timing, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson are some mean-ass, good-looking Marines and Megan Fox is presumably the hottest biker chick in the entire world. This, not to mention the enormous 'bots who partake in endless dramtic fight scenes and end up providing a fair bit of the film's comic relief.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a dipping, twisting, adventure of a film that'll pick you up and carry you away for two and a half hours - just what the movies should be! And the IMAX screen makes it even better - if you can see it there, do it now!
