Soft drink reviews: Mountain Dew

by John Finken

Created on: June 27, 2009

You slide your finger underneath the aluminum tab and pull up, causing the metal seam to open up and release the kept air, making that trademark sound that means you're seconds from refreshment. Mountain Dew is the second most popular soda in the US, and with good reason. It's very hard to put the citrus taste of a cold Dew into words, but I'll do my best.

Mountain Dew is my favorite soft drink. It has just the right amount of carbonation to make it taste great and go down smooth. It has a distinct flavor that is unlike any other soda(Mtn Dew knockoffs excluded) that I've ever drank. Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer, and Sprite all take the backseat if there's any kind of Dew around, as nothing compares. Mountain Dew is popular with children and adults alike. It has almost become fashionable among some teenagers!

To put their phenomenal success with Dew to the test, Pepsi Co.(Mountain Dew is a Pepsi, Co. product believe it or not) has marketed plenty of variations of the original. Unlike with colas, the flavors aren't Mtn Dew with Lime and Mtn Dew with Vanilla. They were creative names, to match the creative flavors. There was Mountain Dew Code Red, which had a cherry flavoring, and marketed very well. Later there was Mountain Dew Live Wire, which had a very obvious orange flavor to it. After the success of previous variations, Pepsi Co. decided to have a fun contest where 3 flavors were introduced for a few month's time, and drinkers voted on their favorite online. The contest was called DEWmocracy, and the winner was a variation called Mtn Dew Voltage, which has a raspberry-citrus flavor. Recently, two new flavors were released, made to sponsor World of Warcraft. The flavors are called Horde Red and Alliance Blue, which are both delicious, and are packed with more caffeine than regular Dew. Be sure to try every different kind of Dew at least once and see what you like. Also check the aisles for new releases as well, as they are constantly coming out with more to get people talking.

The original, classic Mountain Dew remains the best seller of all the different variations. It is crisp, smooth, and bursting with flavor. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to change it up every so often with one of the variations, but the original remains my favorite. While I'm almost positive everyone has had a Dew in their life, if you haven't, you need to find out what you're missing. You can buy 2 liters of the stuff for about a dollar, so there's nothing stopping you from Dew enlightenment today!
