to build their nests such as bits of leaves, spider webs, lichens and mosses. Willow trees and Eucalyptus trees are good choices that provide leaves for hummingbird nests.
Hummingbird Garden: Supplemental Feeders
Once your hummingbirds become familiar with your hummingbird garden and visit frequently, they will be come dependent upon the food you provide as they must feed three to five times per hour. While planting a large number of nectar flowers will provide plenty of food, there will be times when the flowers aren't blooming, or when few are blooming. For such times, provide hummingbird feeders in your hummingbird garden spaced about 30 feet apart.
Make a sugar water solution for the feeders by dissolving one part sugar in four parts hot water. Allow to cool and pour into your feeders. Any that is left over, be sure to refrigerate. Don't use honey to make hummingbird food for your feeders as honey can develop a fungus that can be fatal to hummingbirds.
Choose hummingbird feeders that are bright red and be sure to keep your feeders clean, washing out with a bleach and water solution every few days.
Hummingbird Garden: Start Small and Enjoy
If you don't want to go all out on a huge hummingbird garden due to time, money or space constraints start small with a few flowers, a birdbath, and a hummingbird feeder. You can add to your hummingbird garden over time. Either way, you will find that watching these fast-moving tiny birds will provide plenty of entertainment and enjoyment for you.
