Are cough medicines necessary?

Throughout the year most of us are likely to suffer from colds and flues that result in a nasty cough. We will probably reach in to the medicine cabinet or visit the pharmacy for some cough medicine, but are we really doing our cough any favours and actually treating or are we just fuelling our bodies with unnecessary chemicals that may do more hard than good.

The truth is that cough medicine may alleviate a few of the symptoms found in a mild cough, but it won't reduce the duration or get rid of it completely. When you cough your body is getting rid of toxins that shouldn't be there. A cough is its way of fighting the foreign toxin. Coughing out mucus is getting rid of toxins from the body and this particularly important for smokers and people who suffer from emphysema.

Natural remedies may be better for your long term health than traditional over the counter cough medicines you might be used to taking. Cough medicines may alleviate your cough but at the same time you are putting unnecessary chemicals into your body that may be cause other health problems. The ingredients in cough medicines may be dangerous if you are using it for long periods of time, your liver has to process it all and too much is no good. In some cases cough medicine has even been found to be addictive.

If you're suffering from a cough and don't want to buy the over the counter cough medicine at your local pharmacy, you might be better of choosing a more natural option. Honey is one of the best and most natural remedies used for cough relief. It won't eliminate your cough completely but it will relieve the symptoms. Buy natural honey, if you can get it straight from the bee that's even better. Take out a tablespoon and eat it slowly so that it's natural ingredients have enough time and opportunity to do their job in reducing your cough symptoms.

If you don't suffer a sever cough, your health might be better of by choosing more natural remedies. Using too many medicines you're body can grow used to certain medicines which can lose their effectiveness over time. If you're not certain about using natural remedies, talk with your doctor and get professional advice.

The thing with most coughs is that they have to go through their natural course. Most medicines are going to be in eliminating them and even while taking cough medicine, the cough will persist and than once it's ready it will disappear. If you are concerned about a prolonged cough than it might be related to something much more serious than a simple cold and you should visit your doctor.
