Walking Your Way to Stress Relief
High stress levels can be a significant contributor to serious health problems. Problems such as elevated blood pressure, higher cholesterol levels, increased risk of heart disease, and the inability to fight off illnesses. Stress suppresses our immune system and can also cause problems with relationships. Interpersonal relationships at work and in the home often times suffer when an employee or loved one is stressed out. Incorporating a walking routine into your week can provide some of that much needed stress relief. Even light walking can have tremendous health benefits.
For people who cannot fit a 30 minute walk into their day, two 10 minute walks have been scientifically proven to have the same benefits on health and stress levels, as the longer walk does. Shorter walks are also a good way to prepare the body and mind, to begin to focus on releasing stress. New walkers can also use the shorter walks to condition a body that's perhaps not used to physical activity. Walking can be increased, as more endurance is achieved.
For optimal stress relief, a walk should be well thought out and planned. If you plan on using an I-Pod or portable CD player, pre-load it with your favorite relaxing music. If you would rather, simply enjoy the sounds around you, which you may not notice during the hustle and bustle of your regular day. Make sure you have adequate time for your walk as well. Interruptions or distractions can backfire on you and could stress you further during your walk.
Scientific studies show that positive chemical changes occur in the brain when people engage in feel-good activities, so make sure that your walk feels good. Wear comfortable, un-binding clothing and comfortable shoes. Plan for weather by checking weather reports, to ensure you are prepared with cold weather gear, or sunscreen and hat for sun exposure. Always carry a bottle of water.
Try to plan for the unexpected. By carrying a cell phone, you can ensure contact with someone in the event of an emergency. Greet others you encounter as you walk with a smile. In addition to the endorphins already pumping through your body from walking, smiling will add a positive attitude to your stress reduction.
Walking for stress relief can also be done in the home by walking in place, or by walking along to a DVD. There are several walking DVDs on the market for those who prefer to stay indoors. Treadmills are ideal for indoor walking. Placing a treadmill outside can also be enjoyable.
Most importantly, walking, whether it is done inside or outside, should be done at a pace that is optimal for relaxation. Pre-planning is key to avoiding distractions for a relaxing, stress-free walk.
