The Hilton is not what it once was. It's still adequate and economical, but a bit threadbare compared to the newer, more luxurious resorts in the more desirable Strip locations. The Hilton is off the Strip, not one block, but actually the equivalent of four long city blocks. You're OK once you're on the property, but walking to the hotel from the Strip late at night is not advised, because that part of town has become a night hangout for the homeless and other less friendly characters.
The Hilton still can boast of having one of the best convention centers in Vegas, and until about ten years ago, was THE place to hold major meetings. However, because of its now-isolated location, many major conventions have moved to the big, newer resort hotels, such as the Wynn, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and Paris.
The Hilton does have excellent entertainment and outdoor facilities. If travelling with kids, the Star Trek Experience is a good attraction for them. Incidentally, the permanent stand-up comic's name is David Brenner, not Banner. If you like the "clean" comics of the Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno style, David is also well worth seeing.
