Nicknamed The Human Highlight, Dominique Wilkins was one of the most high-flying, entertaining, and athletically-gifted NBA players of his generation. He played above the rim, and was renowned for his dunking skills. But his game was much more than just as an athletic wingman... he was also one of the best and most talented and productive players during his NBA career.
After entering the NBA from the University of Georgia, he spent the first 11+ years of his career with the Atlanta Hawks, the team that he is obviously most remembered with. Wilkins is a 9-time all-star who once finished as high as #2 in the MVP race, making the All-NBA First Team once in his career.
Wilkins was one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA during his career. In 1985-86 he actually led the Association in scoring at a clip of 30.3 PPG, and for his career he averaged nearly 25 PPG. He finished in the top 10 in the NBA in scoring 9 times during his career, and currently sits at the 10th spot on the all-time NBA scoring list. While he primarily used his athleticism to score with his slashing ability and ability to get to the rim, he could do a lot of things on the offensive side of the ball. He was never a great 3-point shooter, but at 32% for his career he could at least keep defenses honest. He was also very solid with an 81% FT percentage for his career. His total FG percentage was about 46%.
His best season was 1985-86, where he led the NBA in scoring and finished 2nd in the MVP race. That season he also pulled down nearly 8 rebounds per game and swiped the opponent almost 2 times a game. He was at his best on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, and was recognized on the All-NBA first team as one of the best players in the NBA.
But his value was not strictly limited to scoring. He was a solid rebounder throughout the course of his career, average nearly 7 per game. He was also solid on the defensive side of the ball, using his athleticism to make plays. He is in the top 50 all-time in NBA history in steals, as he racked up 1378 of them throughout his career.
Dominique Wilkins was one of the most explosive players ever, standing out above most others in his generation in the NBA. He was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, ranking #10 all-time in total points scored. Unfortunately, he was not able to turn this into an NBA title, and holds the sorry distinction of being one of the best players in NBA history never to win a championship. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2006.
