Short stories: A science fiction mystery

took toward the tree branches with all their might and began to reach the sky as they jumped from tree top to tree top. On their way out Ryan took what he thought to be his one last look at his old prison. Sara was the first to hit the ground running. She had no desire to look back, no need to take a last glimpse. Their feet took them to Sara's house first with only the thought of freedom in their minds. Even the ever silent kids seem to giggle with joy as they ran.

Sara couldn't believe how bright her white brick house showed in the never end darkness of that night. Free will tasted fresh on her lips as she reached the doorsteps. Ryan stood at the end of the grass, close to the street wonder if it could really be this easy. Is this all? No more? Can this really be it?, the questions with over and over in his mind as he saw Sara reach her front door. The doorbell rang and for a while there was nothing, but silence that reached their ears.

Then the door opened and there stood Sara's mother. Tears were going full blast down her mother's cheeks with no sign of stopping. Her golden like hair was undone in a bird nest's land slide. The dress she wore was disheveled and ruin. Bight red shown in her eyes as to say she had been crying for hours, maybe days. She turned her head slowly from side to side, but there was no sign of her lost daughter. She saw nothing, and wasn't going to see anything. The door slammed shut in Sara's face. An attempt jump to take down the door with her fists was her only reaction she could manage, but Ryan got her hold her back by her wrists at the last minute.

Surprised by the sudden grip on her hands she turned to the side to see Ryan's face while still being hold back. His hazed brown eyes seem to stare back at her. Somehow he knew what was going on, somehow.

She didn't see you, he whispered. He didn't want the kids to hear, that now stood in the grass with big sets of sweet innocence eyes.

Well, SHE WILL SEE Me! Sara screamed and tried to reach the door, but Ryan caught her. She had no reason to be sweet, not now. This was her one last hope and for once she wasn't going to be quiet and listen to Ryan.

He let out frustrated sigh, She is never going to see you. Not even these children can see us. This took hold of her attention and she began to turn around to look at the kids. They never did talk, but at least they would react to them at times, either by a nod or a slight smile. Their faces were blank as if they thought themselves
