American Mastiffs are a relatively new breed of dog. The breed has only been around for about 30 years. Careful crossbreeding between English Mastiffs and Anatolian Mastiffs created the breed. They were originally bred at the Flying W Farm in Ohio. Now they are bred all over the United States.
American Mastiffs are large and powerfully muscled dogs. They have thick bodies, medium sized heads and long tapering tails. Adult American Mastiffs are typically between 2 feet 4 inches and 3 feet tall. They weigh between 140 and 200 pounds. They have large feet and fairly broad shoulders. Males of the breed are slightly larger than females.
American Mastiffs are short-haired dogs. They may have apricot, brindle ar tan coloring. All true American Mastiffs have a black "mask" on their snout. They may also have white markings. At the time of birth, these dogs have dark fur. As an American Mastiff ages its color lightens. They do shed and should be brushed accordingly. They typically have brown eyes, but they may be amber.
These dogs are often described as patient, calm and quiet with proper training. They are fiercely loyal and devoted dogs. They are not naturally aggressive but will act when their family is threatened. They can be playful with their family and other dogs, but do have a tendency to be lazy. They are known to be fond of children and can make good family pets. However, they are big and all big dogs should be supervised around small children.
Grooming for American Mastiffs is not difficult. They only require brushing and bathing for on an as needed basis. They do need regular exercise, but can be happy in a small dwelling. They are not overly excited dogs. Apartments are okay as long as the dog gets walked daily. Barring serious illness and with proper care these dogs can be expected to live 10-12 years.
If you would like to adopt an American Mastiff, one of the following breeders and rescues may be able to help. It is important to know that most breeders and rescue operations that work with American Mastiffs will only give or sell these animals to a good family.
