There are two sides to this coin. On one hand you want to provide for your children and help them with their needs. On the other hand the values and responsibility learned from teaching children to work for their money, how to spend money correctly, and making smart choices is crucial to the development into adulthood.
Imagine being thrust into the world with no skills on how to handle money. This is unfortunately true for many young adults. One way to combat this is by teaching them early about money and responsibility. Most people are visual learners so showing by example and giving responsibilities with money young will increase the chances for success as they enter adulthood.
Of course, you are not going to make them earn money and pay for everything, but to truly give them the skills they need to work for the money and learn to balance their needs and wants. You will find that giving them such skills will carry over into adulthood and your children will have less of a struggle with credit and money in general.
There are also courses that can be taken to better these skills. Life skills classes are often used to help not only utilize the value of money but how to live on a budget as well. By having children not only take these classes but participate themselves in life they are on their way to financial success before it really counts.
As parents, yes, we are going to provide for the young adults and help them as needed, but to not have them do these steps only sets them back in the long run when they need to know it. If they are not in a position to get a job you can simply give them chores or work to do around the house. Even if you do not give them an allowance you can show them that by working they earn things they need and want.
While many might think it is not suitable to have young adults work for their money and things they need you as a parent are teaching them one of the most crucial lessons in life. These life lessons are one of the best gifts you can give to your children growing up.
While there are two sides to every coin, in this case, teaching them the responsibility and skills for the use of money will greatly impact them as adults. They may not like the idea now but when they get older and understand these skills they will appreciate it even more. As parents we are in a valuable position to teach our kids the life skills they need to succeed in adulthood and this is no exception.
