Even a large room will appear small if it is filled with a whole lot of furniture, with little space for a person to enter and exit the room in question. In other words, one should have ample space in which to move around within any room within ones humble abode.
On the other hand, a small room is a small room and one should be mindful of what such a small room can easily accommodate, in regard to the size and the amount of furniture that one puts into that small room.
It is also wise to paint the walls and the trim within such a room with a light pastel color that is soft on the eyes. The more light that enters the room the bigger it will also appear. Light color print wallpaper with a small floral print or country scene design, rather than large flowers and leaves and wide vines upon it, give the affect of being in the country or being at a distance from the scene depicted. Thus, that room will look or seen larger than it really is.
A large mirror hung on one side of the room will reflect the image of the other side of the room back to the viewer. That will have the affect of making the room appear to be twice as large as it truly is.
So too, there is a place for everything and everything should be in its proper place. One must place ones furniture within those areas of the room that provide the greatest utility of that furniture by those who are in that room. In that regard, one should never block a doorway with an item of furniture that would cause the person to walk around that obstruction in order to leave the room.
Small bedrooms that are tastefully decorated in such a manner require the use of twin or full sized beds rather than huge water beds. Huge dressers and vanities properly belong in oversize bedrooms. A low boy dresser with mirror can serve the same purpose as a vanity and that huge dresser and such an item of furniture is better suited for use by the person who is in the room.
Clearly, there are places for such large and/or bulky furniture but a small room is not such a place. Desks can be used within a living room, family room, library and/or study. Large house plants, gross quantities of collectibles and the like should be tastefully displayed in larger rooms within your home, particularly if a large display case is required or those plants simply are in the way and giving you the feeling that you are in the midst of a jungle.
After all, we are human beings, rather than apes who can easily hop over objects and swing suspended from light fixtures. So too, one should never install a huge light fixture or an over sized ceiling fan within a room where such fixtures serve no practical purpose. If you find yourself closed in, so to speak, because you have more personal property than your living space can accommodate you should seek a larger place in which to live or reduce the quantity of the objects contained within your home.
