How to Make the Ultimate Adult Summer Party Fruit Dessert

Recently, I was asked by my editor to contribute to the cookbook her sorority was publishing in the holiday dessert section. This got a big laugh from everyone who has ever shared a meal at my apartment. It seems all of my favorite recipes start out "Cut slit in cellophane to vent". I live alone and really have only a couple of meal preparing rules...if it fits in the microwave or it is chocolate, it's good enough.

Yet, I really wanted to contribute and my memory did not fail me. It seems I do have one holiday recipe that gets me invited to a lot of parties...but only if the holiday falls in the warmer months. I call it my "Ultimate Adult Summer Party Fruit Dessert"...or "Adults Only, Watermelon." Girls, you will be amazed by your sudden popularity at the party. You seem to get prettier with every slice of watermelon you serve and by the time the guests get down to eating the rind, at least one young man will be falling at your feet. *

What do you need for this recipe?

1 LARGE whole Watermelon

1 pint bottle of 100% vodka.

1 sharp pointed knife for cutting a plug out of the watermelon.

Usually while serving, it is helpful to have an assistant to card the recipients of your watermelon surprise and a designated driver to take people home from the party may be necessary.

1. The day before the party, take one super large watermelon and cut a plug out of the top. Set it aside to use later

2. Push one pint bottle of 100 proof vodka neck down into the unplugged place on the watermelon and secure it so the bottle won't fall out. Refrigerate until it is time to leave for the party.

3. Pull out and discard the empty bottle, then replace the plug securely.

My fabulous recipe, however, has gone unpublished. My editor's sorority, Daughters of the First American Temperance Society, declined it with extreme prejudice. I'm still picking watermelon seeds out of my hair.

* Unfortunately, sometimes the young men falling to your feet cannot get back up.
