How to find a good boxing trainer

by Kimberly Roos

Created on: June 25, 2009

Finding the right boxing trainer is hard to do. It may take time, but with some patience, you will find the right one for you.

To locate local boxing trainers you should check your local gyms first, get referrals from other boxers in your area, and if all else fails, check the internet for listings. Where you find them is not nearly as important as finding the one that works for you.

The first thing to look for in a trainer, before you ever sit down to talk to them, is their certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Then you should check to make sure they have liability insurance. Although it is rare that you will need the insurance, it is important that they carry it just in case.

Once you have established that the trainer is certified and has insurance you should check their background. It is important to know the success of the trainer. Has this trainer ever boxed before, as an amateur or professional? Has this trainer ever trained anyone who has gone on to be a golden gloves champ? Have they ever trained anyone who has gone on to have a successful professional boxing career? Have they ever trained anyone to actually move forward in the boxing world or do they simply use boxing training as a means of fitness? Questions like these will help you see their past successes. This is not to say that just because they haven't had a breakthrough star that they can't. If you click well with the trainer, they should stay on your list of possibilities.

When you are interviewing trainers, take notes. You need to know things like how open their schedule is and if there are going to be any upcoming demands on his or her schedule that will conflict with your training. If there are times in your trainers schedule that he or she has to focus primarily on someone else, then who will take their place in keeping you motivated and on target. You should meet this person and make sure you feel comfortable that he or she could keep you motivated. This person is not as important as your primary trainer but you may have to work with them at some point so it is important that you are at least comfortable that they will take care of you. You don't want to get one trainer confused with another and it is important to note how you feel with the trainer. Remember that the most important part of being a trainer is having your boxers trust and respect. If you don't feel like you could respect this person and trust them with your life you should immediately remove them from your list. Boxing can be a dangerous sport and your trainer is your most important ally, so be sure you feel completely at ease with them.

A great thing to do when interviewing trainers is to ask for a trial workout. If the trainer makes you work hard and motivates you to push farther than you ever have than this is probably the trainer for you.
