Poetry: I used to be

by Milton Johanides

I used to be the one you called
The one you loved the best
Love we shared, that never palled,
Was sweeter than the rest.

But bitter came the taste of lies
That summer day you left
Lying on a bed of sighs
I cried, distraught, bereft.

Now comes the lonely icy shore
And comes the clifftop ledge
Why did you have to close that door
And drive me to the edge?

I used to be in love with you
You made me feel so right
I used to be but am no more
Now every day's a fight.

Once I was a happy man
And you were all I needed
But now I'm just the also-ran
Betrayed, abused, defeated.
