Buy generic

Buying generic items can be a great way to save money on grocery costs. Unfortunately it can also be an incredible waste of money as well. The cost of generic or store brand items versus the national brand is significant. One concern with generic items is that the quality is less than the national brand. This may be true in some cases. Be sure to know what items are worth the savings and what generic items to avoid. There are some cases that the national company is the producer of the generic product and the other company simply packages the product. This is especially true of major grocery chains and their store brand products. The generics may have some slight differences but the quality is generally still very high. This makes generics a great buy for the consumer. Check out the generic items in the store next time and do a price comparison to see the difference.

Take advantage of sales

Each week grocery stores have various offers on sale items. Knowing what is on sale and where can be a great help when planning the weekly shopping. Taking advantage of sale items can save large amounts of money over the course of the year. Be sure to know the quality of the item before making the purchase because saving money on a low quality product is never a bargain.

Shop grocery outlet stores

A number of grocery outlet stores are opening. These stores are usually connected with a bakery of some sort and carry discounted breads, buns and snack cakes. These stores usually carry a number of specialty items that are products of the bakery chain not necessarily sold in stores. These stores can sell product that is not acceptable for sale in main grocery stores. Many times these issues have to do with packing errors of mislabeling. Sometimes the store carries items because there was overproduction. The outlet stores are set up for quick sale and want to sell the items as fast as possible.
