A guide to the best high end gifts for girls

Buying gifts for someone other than yourself is an art. Not only do you have to take age, gender and price into account, you also have to pick something they will like. Unless you are shopping for someone who is exactly like you, you'll need to do a little research on the recipient.

Two of the most difficult groups to buy for are kids and teens. They want all the latest technology and fashions out there and knockoffs won't cut it. IPods and video game systems are fine for some, while others prefer computers and designer clothes. If you don't buy smart, you'll end up paying for it in the end.

The best time of year to buy gifts is during and after Black Friday. Stores across the country are fighting for sales during the Christmas season and they slash prices all over the place. If you don't mind bumping elbows with other sales enthusiasts, you can find great deals and save a ton of money. As long as you read sale flyers and subscribe to discount alert websites, you'll be able to snatch up the hottest gift items at rock bottom prices.

Kids want what they see on TV. Pay attention to commercials geared towards children and see what they are advertising. What's big this year, probably wasn't last year and probably won't be next year. And just because you bought him the action figure he wanted last year, doesn't mean that he'll like a similar toy this year. Things change.

If you go with an educational theme, try something that disguises learning in a fun way. Your gift is sure to be a hit if they don't even know they're learning. If you notice the child is into music or crafts, buy gifts that help them express those interests. Craft kits and musical games are very big these days. Use what you know about the child and buy accordingly.

Teens are the most difficult to buy for. Each one has unique likes and dislikes that can be impossible to predict. Pay attention to what they are wearing, or what they are listening to. If you're not the parent, this may be difficult but don't be shy about asking mom and dad for a little guidance. If you know they are into music, perhaps an ITune gift card so they can fill up their IPod. If they wear trendy clothes that change with the season, perhaps a mall gift certificate is a good idea. This way they can buy what they want from wherever they want it. And when in doubt, ask them what they're into. Chances are they'll be more than happy to let you know.

With the way trends and fashions change these days, buying ahead of time is a terrible idea. Your gift is likely to be outdated or upgraded before they even unwrap it. If you chose to buy based on something they liked last year, it's an almost certain fact that your gift will be a disappointment. Buy for each child or teen individually and with their interest at heart. And when in doubt, cash is always a welcome alternative.
