Born and bred in Gillingham; Roland Edge is an English footballer currently playing for Maidstone United in the Ryman Premier League. Edge is a PE Teacher by trade; he's been playing football all his life though, and joined his hometown team of Gillingham FC at the age of sixteen.
After joining Gillingham at sixteen, Roland Edge went on to make more than 100 appearances for the club, and even got his name on the score sheet in the process. The defender improved hugely in this period, and always had a lot to offer as a player. He was one of Gillingham's very best players at the time, and in 2003 Roland Edge moved into the Scottish Premier League with Hibernian. After spending just a single year in Scotland; Edge was to move on again, this time joining Hull City.
Edge battled hard for fitness at Hull, and made 22 league appearances during his spell with the club; injury held him back however, forcing him to compete at a far lower level than he had been used to. Edge had shown so much promise and potential as a player up to this point, when injury hits there's not much that can be done though, and Edge took some time out from football before ultimately moving into non-league football with Folkestone Invicta.
Back in his home county of Kent, Roland Edge was now to make a strong name for himself in the non-league, and played well for Folkestone during his time with the club. After playing well for Folkestone; in summer 2008 Edge made another move, and this new chapter in his career would now see him join Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United.
Edge has been impressive for Maidstone so far, and performed very well in his first season with the club. The 30 year-olds huge wealth of experience really did help Maidstone in the 2008/09 season, and throughout the season he always looked confident in his position. He has always been a quality defender, and although injury has held him back in his career; the quality is certainly still there, and this is something that he is currently showing for Maidstone.
Roland Edge is a player that can always be relied upon, and is a very impressive player in non-league football. There are few steadier footballers at his level than Roland Edge, and Maidstone United could certainly do a lot worse than having Roland Edge in the defence. Roland Edge is one of the very best defenders in the Isthmian League, and Maidstone United is extremely lucky to have him.
