One of the most important aspects of a wedding reception is the food. In between dance floor antics and best man toasts, comes the meal. Guests need this time to socialize, re-energize and sometimes to regroup. And while it isn't the cost that really matters, the types of food that you choose can really make or break a wedding reception.
Your guests will probably be very well dressed, not to mention the fact that you too will be wearing expensive once in a lifetime garments that you don't want ruined.
Serving items with spaghetti sauce or greasy gravies is probably not a good idea if you're trying to avoid stains. You also don't want to sacrifice taste or selection because you're afraid of making a mess.
Buffets are usually the cheapest way to go. Guests serve themselves different food items according to their own palate. And while something like Sloppy Joes sounds like an economical choice on paper, in reality it's a real 'no no' in terms of keeping guests clean. Something with sloppy in the title should send up red flags when everyone will be wearing their Sunday Best. Instead pick something like burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches that will keep costs low and your guests satisfied.
Another type of food to avoid is anything that may slow your guests down after eating it. Turkey and mashed potatoes is a delicious selection, but unless you want your guests asleep at their tables, it may not be an appropriate menu item on your special day.
Perhaps small chicken breasts with a lighter more flavorful gravy and seasonal veggies will suffice. This choice can curb their appetites so they can get on the dance floor to enjoy the DJ you paid so much for.
Stay away from gassy foods too. Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are the biggest culprits in this category. You don't want people with bulging gassy bellies, especially in enclosed spaces. The staples tend to be one beef selection, one poultry selection, and one seafood selection. With veggies and salad to fill in the gaps, there will be just enough room for a slice of wedding cake for desert.
Your reception is what people will remember. Make sure you choose things that people will enjoy, but that won't break the bank. Whether your food is white glove catered or cooked on the grill by Uncle Bill, the food you serve makes the event. Good luck and make sure you find the time to eat on your big day. Brides and grooms have a tendency to forget!
