Many people who go into business want to make that business their own. They want to make all the decisions and are not eager to accept the advice of others. This is a crucial mistake. When starting a business or operating a business those who do the best are those who take in all the information they can, sift through it, and apply the best of the advice they receive. Here are some of the reasons it's important to seek business advice:
1. Seeking advice is one of the most time-efficient ways you can improve your business. Not all advice will be good advice. You will have to determine what's right for you, but it's much more efficient to ask others what they would do about a situation rather than implementing one plan after another in a trial and error manner.
2. Others, who have been in business much longer than you, will know much more about the business than you do. Therefore, seeking advice will help you because you will gain from their experience and their mistakes. That doesn't mean that just because a business tactic failed for one person that you shouldn't try it. It does mean that if you implement it you should implement it, fully informed of the risks. By knowing the risks, you will be able to determine if it's worth your while to try it.
3. Seeking business advice will probably save you money. If you want to take your business from one level of operation to another, you can, if you have unlimited funds, just experiment with one method after another to reach your goal. Or, you can seek advice and research feasible methods of reaching your goal and choose one that has a high probability of success. That will save you money in the long run.
4. Seeking advice doesn't have to be expensive either. Much of the advice you're looking for is already out there. You may need to hire a consultant for a sticky problem, but in many cases, you can seek advice by reading books on the topic at hand or researching your business questions on-line through traditional research means or through groups on line where professionals in different businesses share ideas.
5. Seeking advice for your business is also valuable when you do so by joining an organization or by attending a seminar. By doing one or both of these things, you meet people who have the same questions you do. Often, you'll find an environment where you can network with others who are interested in helping each other.
You can remain an island in conducting business, but you'll find that it's much more productive to ask the questions that arise and seek advice when you need it in growing and running your business.
