There are two things that are essential when contemplating buying for your first baby. The first is common sense and the second is patience. Common sense will prevent you buying everything anyone recommends and patience will serve you as you trawl through the huge amount of products that claim to be 'essential' for baby. That said; let's see what actually is 'essential'.
Sleeping - Do you really need fancy crib? Babies leak from both ends and you'll spend a lot of time cleaning all that frilly and fancy crib decoration. On top of baby's washing that makes for work you don't need. It's worth going plain and simple.
Make sure your crib conforms to current safety standards. This is especially important if you are buying your crib second hand. There is nothing wrong with economizing by purchasing good quality, used baby items but always bear the safety angle in mind.
If you want baby to sleep in your room for the first two or three months think about the crib you buy. Rather than invest in a Moses basket, buy a crib that will fit into your bedroom and can be easily moved into baby's room at a later date.
Bedding is a minefield. There are hundreds of styles to choose from and every one can seem more adorable and 'I must have' than the last. Step away from the credit card and think. Who are you buying all those cavorting bunnies and trademarked characters for? Do you really think baby is going to care who is on the bedcover for those first few months?
You need:
2 lightweight blankets (For all it is one on and one in the wash)
2 'winter' blankets'
2 fitted sheets
2 waterproof sheets
That really is all that should be on your 'essential bedding' list. You can have any color you like, even fluffy bunnies and Barney if you must, but don't go crazy and bankrupt yourself for no good reason.
Baby Alarm - This goes along with sleeping or for any time that baby is out of your sight. A good baby alarm is essential.
Feeding - Sleeping and feeding are all you will think about for the first few weeks with baby. Essentials for your feeding needs are:
6-8 bottles - complete with teats
1 sterilizer unit
2 bottle brushes
At least 12 bibs (more if possible)
Breast Feeding essentials:
Breast pump
Breast pads (washable will save you money in the long run
