Movie reviews: My Bollywood Bride

even older than that. I didn't buy her character for one minute, she's supposed to be a Bollywood star and we're supposed to buy that she gets engaged to a guy just because her mother says it's the right thing to do. I can't accept that this would actually really happen and it's almost insulting that as viewers we're expected to take this aspect of the story seriously. It's quite open knowledge about how pretty much all Bollywood actresses date people from the same industry be they actors or producers or directors (and they have done so for several decades) and yet we're supposed to believe this girl is still a virgin and the thug of a director she's engaged to hasn't pressured her to take things further. As I said I've not seen her in any other films (that I'm aware of) and I really don't rate her acting skills at all after seeing this film and then to find out she was also involved in writing the screenplay

The character of the fianc, Shekhar Singh, is played by Gulshan Grover, who is well known for playing the villain in many a Bollywood film. His role is somewhat villainous in the film but he plays the role comically. Well - it was supposed to be comical - I didn't particularly find him funny. He's more convincing when he plays the bad guy in a straight manner. This type of comedy did not suit Grover. He can pull off menacing bad guy really well.

I found the character of Reena extremely annoying for some reason and didn't empathize with her predicament at all. There was no chemistry between her character and that of Alex so how are we supposed to believe they even have feelings for each other. I waited throughout the film for her to show some spark of acting ability but it wasn't forthcoming. The character of Reena's mother was played by Madhuri Bhatia was quite entertaining to watch, even though she was a supporting role, she actually had more acting prowess than most of the other characters. She came across as a typical mother wanting to see her daughter succeed in the profession that she herself gave up years ago to get married and have a family, except she wants her daughter to marry someone big in the industry and not some struggling writer from the USA. By the way there's no hint of racism in any of this (with Alex being a white guy and all that). The mother's reasoning behind wanting her daughter to marry Shekhar is strictly money and status motivated.

I didn't even smile at any of the comedy scenes and found myself cringing at what
