Your first impression on the other person forms the base on which further interactions with the person takes place. A good solid foundation goes a long way in fulfilling the desired objective behind the interaction. Hence it pays to take care at the start of the interaction as to what image are you portraying about yourself to the next person. It is not only crucial for interpersonal relationships but also for business relations. Whether you are going for your first date or you are appearing for an interview or if someone visits your online profile, the impression about you gathered at the first instant lingers in the mind of the person for a long time.
Most of the times people assume that in business your impression does not matter, what matters is the financial proposition or the mutual benefits which can occur to both parties. Even though there is some truth is in it; the success in relationship is also dependent on how you appear, how you conduct and how you sell yourself. Your image is reflection of your brand and better is your image, easier you will be able to sell yourself.
There are various aspects of branding yourself and most of it is revealed in the first meeting itself.
1) Your appearance
Do you wear Armani blazer when you are going to watch a soccer game or do you choose to wear casual clothes at your friend's wedding ceremony? You probably do not and if you had done so at any point of time you would know the embarrassing situation which you would have found yourselves to be in. You should be dressed for the occasion. For business meetings you should wear formal clothes and that does not necessarily mean that you should be wearing the most expensive labels; though it might be required in exceptional situations.
2) Your etiquettes
A casual approach in your demeanors towards others can seriously hamper your chances in a business meet. Your financial credibility and your reputation would mean nothing if you are not able to leave impression in the first meeting with your clients or partners. The way your communicate and the way you present yourself to the rest of the people conveys a lot about your traits which will be perceived good or bad for any business relationship with you. If you are polite, firm, honest in dealings, like people and have an acute sense of business without being overly selfish you will have better chances of beating someone with more experience but having lesser of such traits.
3) Your network
If you are a regular visitor to high social-circuit parties you are already a known face. However even if you are not visitor to such parties while you maintain relationships either at a personal or at a social level with well known people, you would be perceived differently by people. You would carry an aura of your network with you and that would help you clinch many a deals. It is always nice to dance with larger elephants because that raises your status in the society and when you meet someone for the first time the information about your networks will create a solid impression about you.
So, by this time you know the essentials for creating a unique and everlasting positive impression in the mind of the person whom you will meet for the first time. And if you have penchant for learning always you will go farther because you would have so much to learn from the established people in business community. Never ever take anything for granted in business and always be on your toes and never shy from seeking professional help in grooming yourself and your image. After all you are a brand in itself.
