Can Twitter become an addiction?

by Dondria Cooper

I really don't know what to say about this topic. I think it is hilarious coming from the view that when twitter first came out I was not on the bandwagon. My roommate and her sister would always talk about twitter and I would get annoyed by them talking about it. I was so used to facebook and myspace and I just figured I didn't have enough time to update my life anymore with a constant update on things. My time on myspace had already become less and less. So I knew if I got a twitter, I probably would not get on as much.

Little did I know that twitter would become addicting. It first started when I was leaving from school to go back home and my roommate set me up an account over my phone. I asked her what she was doing and she replied this way you can keep up with us and we can keep up with you. I didn't understand at the time because like I said I have facebook and myspace and that was my means of communication on the Internet. So after I left I made a few tweets (I think that's what you call them) about things that were going on. I saw that people were replying to others and I wanted to also, but didn't know how. It took me a whole month to finally get how to reply to someone and I thought that was just crazy. Although I thought this way, I still would post tweets. I could not understand why, but I felt the need to get on there and update.

So yes I guess you can say it can become addicting if you let it. Every time I hear on the TV of someone twittering I still cringe. Especially when you hear older people have a twitter like parents and grandparents. Also like any other form of communication on the web, celebrities have them and you can follow them and view their updates, but sometimes people create false accounts and pretend to be someone totally different. I also think it is addicting because it is some thing new and when you hear of new things you want to try them out.

Overall, I think twitter is the thing in the now, but over the years something else will come out and people will become addicted to that. As far as twitter today, yes it is addicting. It has that feel of keeping up with other without talking with them in person, but yet still knowing what is going on in their lives. I always say people come out with new high tech gadgets to embrace the minds on people in the society. For something to become a hit all you need is a few people backing it and then it will take off. Now I must go tweet now.
